A conference in my field is scheduled to be in Malaysia. Being on the job market, I probably ought to go. As a female type, however, I'm not sure how safe I would be. Is a solo female going to be safe in Kuala Lumpur, or is this conference one I should forego?

I don't have any experience with Kuala Lumpur, but is the conference center at a hotel? If you stay at the conference hotel, it will give you time to get a sense of the area around the hotel and how safe it is (I'm not sure that KL has any special things to worry about that you wouldn't concern yourself with when travelling to any city like it). Worst case: you stay in the whole time. Best case: you explore with other conference goers or by yourself at times and places it is safe to do so... |

Perfectly safe for women (as safe as any big city, and much safer than many). The one threat is pickpockets/purse snatchers so be aware, they tend to target tourists. But otherwise you should have a great time!

I was in KLM last March. A wonderful city! It was great! And I am a female too - and never felt in danger. I am sure the same precautions apply as anywhere... but yes- go.

Kuala Lumpur is a very safe and pleasant city -- you should definitely go! It has excellent and inexpensive food, a decent public transit system, and people are generally helpful and kind.

I think it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask about any city one has not visited before.
KL is quite nice. It's less conservative than the other Malaysian cities I've visited, and a solo female shouldn't have any trouble. Make sure to check out the night market! (standard after-dark-in-a-city personal safety rules apply)

No. Malaysia is not actually a majority Muslim country (it's something like 45%, but is increasing). There are some regions (particularly in the East) which are very devout. But the major metro areas are not like that. They have large Chinese and Indian populations, as well as people from many other groups (you may be surprised how diverse it is in KL). The city is very modern downtown, and though you will see some women in headscarves, you will also see girls in cutoffs and tube tops (it's damn hot there you know!). Just dress as you normally would for a conference (remembering that anything indoors is airconditioned to subzero levels). |
