I'm a broke grad student.
DON'T JUDGE ME!
Dude, Apple can afford it, plus you've just given a very nice plug for their customer service staff. Nothing there to judge.

Maybe this isn't the best time to ask, but--what is an iPhone, anyway?
My students talk about them. But then, they also talk about Britney, so....

I washed my cell phone twice and it still worked. I had to take it apart and put it under a lamp to dry. I'd take it to an Apple store and tell them what happened.
This sounds like a good opportunity to motivate him to do his own laundry.

Seriously? http://www.apple.com/iphone/But basically, it's a cell phone & iPod in one - along with camera, web browser, etc. Like many phones today, it's less of a "phone" and more a miniature computer that also makes calls. Most higher-end phones do these things now, but the appeal of the iPhone is classic Apple strategy - it does them attractively and in a way that people who aren't engineers might actually be able to comprehend. Thus, its amazing success. Apple should just start sponsoring this thread. Steve Jobs, I'll send you my address for the advertising fee

Oh believe, me, his laundry is his own problem now. It is an amazing instrument. The funny thing is, he takes (or took) wonderful care of it. I would Never get an Iphone. I drop my regular phone at least three times per week.
We go to Apple tomorrow. Here's hoping...

UPDATE: Well, wonder of wonders, his phone did turn on today; looks like it is working, except for the music. We did go to the Apple store, but they are now prepared for this kind of thing. They had a bouncer of sorts, who would not even let us in the door. Kept saying, "What a shame. " We did not expect a replacement phone, but had hoped they had some ideas re: the music. Well, it was nice to get thier sympathy, anyway.

Seriously--they would not let you in the door? I would make a huge stink about that!

That's bizarre. I would try to make an appointment at the Genius Bar. When you get there, you could make it clear that you know it's not a warrantied problem, but that you were hoping they might have an idea of how to fix the iPod part. I can't imagine them turning people away at the door!! That's absurd!

I've dropped the remote in the toilet twice. Probably another reason my son doesn't let me touch his stuff.
I am afraid to ask, but what were you doing with a remote in the bathroom where it could fall into the toilet? I could see a bath tub if you had a TV in the bathroom (which I find odd, but I have images of Tim Allen on Home Improvement with his man's bathroom and giant screen TV).

As someone who has dropped her cell phone in the toilet, I would hazard to guess that maybe punchnpie had stuck it in her back pocket while she was walking around and then forgot about it...

Cool. You're good until the user inaccessible battery craps out in 5, 4, 3.....
