Welcome to the fora!
Thanks!
Even if he did have the e-text, why would he have to type on his phone? Seems like a liar to me.
I don't know--browsing? I've never actually used the e-text, but you're probably right. Still, what to do if students
do purchase e-texts and use smart phones to access them?
He may have been browsing to access the text, or he may have had the text open and was doing a search to get to the correct chapter, or he may have been accessing (or taking) notes on the text. (Most text e-readers I'm familiar with have a means of taking notes, highlighting, etc.)
As I said, above, most of my profs waive their 'no electronics' policies when they know the electronics are being used appropriately. If a student is taking notes, accessing an e-text, etc., there is no problem; if a student is texting, FBing, etc., they're told to put them away. As I also said, that may not work for everyone. Our class and student body size is such that profs can pretty easily tell who is (or is likely to be) doing what. The students know, too, so there haven't been any issues that I'm aware of with being flexible, but it may not be possible for everyone, for any number of reasons.
