In update: Met Office gets it right for a change!

I have acquired charcoal and eminently grillable bits of bunny rabbit. Let the pyromania begin!

OK. I will get the white shirts off the line first . . .

Yuck.  As a vegetarian, I'm thinking of reporting this post to the mods for obscenity...  ;)

Ha! You should've seen what I did to the corn cobs and the flatbread ;-)

Sadly, yesterday really does seem to have been the last hurrah. It's perfectly nice today, but about 6C colder than the equivalent time yesterday morning. Sigh.

Lovely here today - outside in the sun. Here's hoping the high pressure lasts!

And the heavens opened . . .

... and Mandelson poured forth his bile and announced a "funding review".

in which "funding will focus on subjects seen as more valuable economically", according to the universities minister.

Gah. It's Keith Joseph and Kenneth Baker all over again. Complete with CASE awards to do PhDs in things that pure researchers actually do better.

Somehow, the day doesn't look so sunny after reading the report on that . . .

Oh no, not again! I am an applied researcher (it is where my interests lie), but I find the pure research done by the people down the corridor to be fascinating and at least one of them has recently crossed the line from pure to applied (a fact that is giving me much mileage in our bantering at the moment). Who knows/determines which research is going to be 'economically valuable'? Is it economically valuable to enable music research that gives our music group a wider repertoire and probably reduces our stress levels and call upon the NHS, as well as, on a good day, providing satisfaction to a wider audience? Is it economically valuable to do historic research that may one day provide a fascinating account in a tourist attraction?  Is it economically valuable to want to know because it is interesting to know and not knowing keeps people awake at night? Anyone looking for a research project and willing to undertake one on 'what constitutes economically valuable research'? Years of collecting longitudinal data for an applied study beckon.....

Off rant and on topic, there is the merest suggested that the promised sun may materialize this afternoon. I still require proof before the laundry goes in!

It's only in the high 80s here today. They say this is autumn and bikini season is over. Noooo! Put those bikinis back on! It's the friggin' 80s!!

On topic - a gorgeous day and shorts weather for a while, starting to cool rapidly now.

Off topic - a very scary time in higher ed!

It's been beautiful here for the past couple of days. Today we walked five miles to view the Tour of Britain race... it went through the next village over. It was a pleasant walk, followed by several glasses of wine/beer (I had wine, Hubby Bubba had beer) and a nice lunch. Then we stood outside the pub and watched the cyclists.

Can't beat that for a lovely autumn day.

Off content topic but on association with title topic:  there's a costume drama about Keats and Fanny Brawne coming out.  I'm kind of afraid to see it, since it could be shockingly awful.  But if I do see it I want to go while it is still flu season, because I figure the background coughing will be nicely atmospheric, almost like the old days when they had live music accompanying silent films.

I would blow a raspberry, but as WH and I grilled on Sunday night and sat out until 9pm, I shall merely grin in a very smug manner.

Besides, it's wonderfully sunny here and only about 1C below what you've got ;-)
