I'm just recovering from the Swine flu (which I oh so hilariously started showing symptoms of the day after I got the vaccine, which was obviously too late).  Here's how it has progress for most of the healthy adults I know who've had it:

1. sniffles
2. sneezing with very slight fever
3. feeling better!  It was just a cold.
4. Return of fever with hacking cough and chills
5. Go to doctor at last.  Get tested.  Discover flu has progressed to bronchitis or pneumonia.  Many drugs.
6. Get phone call confirming Type A flu.  Congratulations.  E-mail everyone for sympathy.

Stupid disease, faking me out at the beginning.

didotwite - that sounds like what happened to my son. PITA if you ask me.

Chills and up and down all night. I think I have a fever now. I just had to go out and get my own medicine as the son and heir doesn't know when he 'might' be able to get to the store for me. I've got some soup on and in a bit I'm gonna try and grade midterms. I wish I could go to bed like other people (son) seem to be able to do, but once I'm up, I'm up, suffering and hypochondriac, but up.  Maybe everyone gets an 'A.'

Is there any way to distinguish swine flu from other viral things? My whole family has had some nasty viral thing sweep through - we all have fevers and chills, and are coughing away. My 3 year old in particular has had some very high fevers the last few days. Still, it doesn't seem much different from any other viral illlness that we might get in the winter. Do I assume it is swine flu, or not?

csgirl - I have gotten the impression that most flu out right now is swine flu.  It sounds like you might all have it as that sounds worse than a cold.

Has anyone got the vaccine yet?

My Uni has a severely limited amount and is giving it out first come first serve to high risk categories and I am trying to decide if I should go.  I have asthma, but am otherwise healthy and feel bad claiming a vaccine when there is so little of it, assuming they would even give it to me.  Ugh.  Asthma is in our risk categories but mine isn't that bad, I just get really bad coughs after colds but have never been hospitalized.  I am really torn.

CS Girl - you probably do have the Dreaded Swine Flu. From what I hear, it's pretty much the only flu making any serious rounds this season.

Titania, get it. Most places that have limited supplies are referring to the amount of vaccinations relative to everybody, not relative to the high-risk category. You probably wouldn't be stealing a vaccine from someone in an iron lung, for instance. If you have asthma, you are high risk. And high risk isn't just high risk for you. If you get sick, and if you have asthma, you're more likely to, then you're high risk for everyone you come into contact with. It's in everyone's best interests for high risk people to get vaccinated first.

When I got my regular flu shot, the pharmacist said it had a couple of strains, things, whatevers from H1N1 and that it should protect me from getting it too bad, if I got it. I do feel like crap, but I am not on my deathbed, as some of my sick students told me, nor am I as sick as my son was, so perhaps I do have some protection from it.

Being diabetic, I get the shot every year and haven't had the flu for ages and rarely get the sniffles for more than a day or two. I'm hoping that if this is the flu, it's a milder version. Most people don't know that being sick can seriously mess with your blood sugars, which is why diabetics are urged to get the flu shot.

So happy...I got my teenager the H1N1 flumist vaccination last night! Whew. Only had to stand in line for an hour - not too bad.  So now he has had both seasonal and H1N1.

Of course, after talking to the mom in front of me for an hour, she tells me that her hubby is home with a fever -he never gets fevers, said she - and probably has H1N1.  I wanted to tear her apart, because if she is contagious (which one is 48 hours before symptoms) and gives it to me/us, I'm going to be very unhappy!

Yech, it got me. Or something did. Fever, chills, aches, and a weird, lung-rattling cough, all of which came on rather suddenly over the course of a few hours yesterday. Though in retrospect, I'd been feeling cold and achy for a few days but wrote it off as, well, November.

This does mean I get to take a sick day and stay home, which is exciting. Or would be, if I had the energy to do anything. I'm sure my students are thrilled!

By the way, my uni has the same policy (well, it seems to be standard) about limiting the vaccine to high-risk groups, to which I do not belong.
