This is more of a duh news story.  Edwards admits paternity

I have to say, I was surprised when I saw this story yesterday.  I hadn't realized he had still been trying to deny paternity.

This one is more appalling than dumb--though it is that, too--and certainly deserves a place on the Fora, though perhaps I should post it under "In the Classroom."

Small-rodent partisans, be careful of clicking on this link.

As a fan of small rodents, I refuse to click on this link, just because the name of the link itself implies it can't be good and I'll get all sad for the hamsters.

It's actually bad for those that like tweens as well.  Not doing much for Georgia's reputation.

I am reminded of a rather tacky joke, which follows:

An adopted child wants to find out about her parents, and so hires a specialist, explaining that she wants to know what her parents did so she can find some kind of guide to what sort of role in life she is "meant" for.  The specialist goes and does research.

"I'm sorry to tell you," he says, "that it seems you're the illegitimate child of an affair between a married, earnest Family Values politician and a drug-addled coke whore."

"Okay," she says, "so I should model my life on the most honorable, honest, and socially acceptable role in my heritage.  Tell me, how do I go about becoming a drug-addled coke whore?"

Yeah, I know; predictable.  But amusing, at least to me.

Well, I didn't mean to kill the thread.  But at the price of double-posting (for which I herewith formally apologize) I will endeavor to make it right again.

Technically, for several years every object in the universe except one has been increasing in mass.  The articles in question make the easy but fundamental error of assuming that the artifact that defines the kilogram has been "shedding mass," which is clearly impossible as the kilogram is defined to be the mass of this artifact.

In the same way, naturally, the variable speed of light theory is obviously wrong.  The speed of light in a vacuum cannot change; all that could happen is that the meter could grow longer or shorter.  (This follows from the fact that the meter is defined to be the distance that light travels in a very brief interval, and the fact that all modern units of distance are now defined in terms of the meter.)  If someone were to say (in ignorance, no doubt) "The speed of light has increased," then what he or she would mean (by definition) is that the length of the meter has decreased; the meter has grown shorter, or (equivalently) the dimensions of all objects in the universe have increased correspondingly.

I know, this news story is old, going back to 2003, but it was the silliest thing I'd run across in a while, and they won't "fix" (i.e., redefine) the kilogram until 2011 at the earliest.

How dumb is Tiger Woods? Tiger Woods let wife Elin talk to mistress Rachel Uchitel for half an hour in desperate bid to convince her they were just friends.

Scientists say alien life could already be lurking among, or even in, us.

Why is this a dumb story?

Fair enough.  Perhaps it's more of an odd news story.  In any case, if there are any aliens living among us (or even on the fora), I meant no disrespect and I'm ready to be beamed up.

Expect an abduction, including the probes in the nether regions, at an undisclosed point in your near future...

Just as a reminder not to alienate aliens.
