I think the 'bitterly cold' needs to be understood in the context of Australia. So many people seem to come here in the middle of winter and wonder why its about 16 (or 10 or whatever) degrees, not 30, and why they can't get around in just shorts and T-shirts. Having said that, this summer doesn't look like its going to be very pleasant at all.

Canberra is cold (in the Australian context), occasionally snows and does get frost. And is hot as hell in summer, previous poster (jeane1) summed it up pretty well. But ANU is well funded, and does have some good people.

Figee is right. I've been to ANU & Canberra in winter. It's only cold to Australians or folks otherwise used to warm climbs. It's not cold to anyone who's lived north of say, Atlanta. "Bitterly cold" to an Aussie is about the same as bitterly cold to a Floridian.
