The new topic boxes in Safari are, on my machine, poorly presented. Text in the text construction box runs oddly off at the right before going to the next line. In Firefox it does not do this. In Safari, the preview box cuts off the text on the left. Firefox does not do this. I am writing this on Firefox, and everything works very nicely, but I'd prefer to stick with Safari.
Does anyone else have this trouble with Safari? I also find Safari makes some Web sites look odd, with text written on top of other text, etc. Mostly on the New York Times Web site. If this is something I can tweak away in Safari settings, I'd be glad to hear about how to do it. I have fiddled a bit with font size adjustment in Safari, and that does not solve the problems in any perceptible way.

The main purpose of Safari is to give the folks in Redmond something they can feel smug about.
Go, use Firefox already.

I am a Mac advocate of the most disgustingly gung-ho type, and I refuse to use Safari. If it's any help, the default skin of Firefox 3.5.2 is uncluttered and Safari-like.

As a Mac person, I use Firefox about 85% of the time; I keep Safari around for those rare times when something doesn't work in Firefox.

OP, what version of Safari are you using? I don't see anything like what you describe on the NY Times site in recent Safaris (e.g. 4.0.2). Can't comment on your first paragraph because I'm not sure what you're describing.

4.0.3 ...is a mystery. Under "Appearance" What "Standard Font" and "Fixed Width Font" are you using?

Lucida Sans 14 and Monaco 13. I also have "Never use font sizes smaller than 12" set in the Advanced pane.
The Times web site shows up in a serif font, so my choices must be over-ridden by their CSS.
You might try creating a new dummy account on your mac and trying Safari from that to see if it's something about your personal settings.
I also use Safari AdBlock and clicktoflash.

I have major problems with the proxy server under Safari. So I mostly use FF to read the CHE. I access CHE through a proxy server at my university.

Correction to that. Safari, under snow leopard, seems to be working much better for CHE. I get the proxy server now without a problem.
