So I go to the job page and enter "Humanities" for a search, and get (among many others)...

Volleyball coach
Dance instructor

Nowhere on these pages does the word "Humanities" exist. "Human Resources" yes, but no "Humanities."

Note: These are not the same.

I want my old page back.

Oh, the humanity (human-resources-ity?)!

The auto-update search emails from before the changeover still haven't been restored either.

I am reminded of this article in Slate from last March.  http://www.slate.com/id/2214447/

Particularly this:

When Slate redesigned its home page last fall, many readers wrote in to complain. Last week I e-mailed a handful of them to see if they still hated Slate's design. A couple of them said they still weren't big fans; most admitted they'd grown used to it and couldn't really recall the old site very well. But several said something I found interesting—that what had bothered them about the redesign wasn't exactly the change but the fact that the changes hadn't seemed necessary. Slate, like a lot of sites, hadn't explained well enough why it was making such sweeping changes.

What exactly was it that was broken here that got fixed?

A:  Missed opportunities to make readers pay for every piece of information.  The part they forget was the need to keep the quantity and quality of information the same (leaving aside the possibility of improvement).

When I start Explorer (7) at the beginning of a day or after a reboot or whatever, all I see at the top of the forums page is the bar at the top that says "premium content."  The rest of the page only shows after I do a manual page reload. I don't understand that.

That was July 25th. Now it's September 3rd. Nothing has changed with regard to this problem.

It's October 9th and this problem remains a problem.

Forgive me, but I admit to a kind of perverse enjoyment when I glance from time to time at this thread.  It reminds me that sunny optimism exists in the face of an absurd world.  This thread tells us what it is to be human.

I think someone mentioned Godot; I am seeing more of a technological cargo cult.

Stay strong, keep optimism alive.  In the meantime there is always http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

Hi Octoprof,

Do you get that 'basically empty page' every single day? Looking into it today, I had it happen to me in Safari, and in IE. I'm pretty sure its either a javascript or CSS error, but knowing if it happens to you everyday would help us debug.

Every single day on both computers, whether at home (laptop) or at the office (tower or laptop).

Do you want a screenshot of the mostly empty page?

As more data, that basically empty page happens to me nearly every day the first time I go to the forums index page, regardless of what machine (Windows, linux, Mac) or browser (Firefox, Mozilla, Camino, Explorer, Safari) I am using.  The few times I got a non-blank page was not notable for a difference in machine or browser.

Me too. The first time I visit the fora after starting/restarting the browser (any Mac browser), I get the empty page. A reload fixes it.

However, this is still a minor annoyance in the face of so many other larger persistent design/usability problems.

It also happens to me. It has been happening since the redesign was first implemented - I took some time to to realize that hitting the refresh button would enable me to access the fora - and it happens every time I log in (the machines do not remember me so I log in every day). I have tried Firefox 3.5 and IE 7 on both XP and Vista machines.

I regularly install the recommended Java updates.
