Hi,

I had previously posted this topic on the 'Job Seeking Experience' board and decided to move here to seek advise on the possibility of post-doctoral oppurtunities. Also please let me know if there is a particular time during the year for research oriented job search.

I shall be completing my PhD in Satellite communications and moving to US by next month. Kindly advise on the academic job market in Satellite communications as well as electrical and electronics field. I would be job hunting in California with main focus on finding research oriented jobs alongside teaching. I have 2 publications in peer reviewed journals and one more lined up for submission.

Thank you.

Check with your scholarly association. That's who gets the job postings.

You know CA's massively in debt, right?  I doubt they're hiring in the state schools -- they're doing furloughs instead.  I don't know your field or postdocs -- NBP's right, check with the national association -- but this is a lousy time to try for anything that depends on state funding!

Unlike the UK market, anything being announced now would be for a 2010 start date.

In any case, all state-run California universities and colleges are currently under a hiring freeze, and many have laid off a substantial number of NTT faculty; the private universities are not in much better shape.  In other words, there are no faculty jobs in California right now, and likely will not be for a year or two in the best-case scenario.  You might have some success finding a postdoc, but again, that would leave you high and dry for at least a year, since the postdocs for the next year have already been awarded.  My guess is that if you really want to be in California, industry is the way to go.
