oh, there's something in the water. Ever since the mods told us about the beta-tested new site....

When all you have is a mackerel, everything looks like a troll.

I kind of want to make this my new signature line, if you have no objections.

I see idiots.

It hardly matters whether or not these are technically 'trolls'.

Troll is just one subset of idiot.

Not really.

The world is full of people who think they are funny or clever.  During the summer they cannot inflict themselves on students and colleagues with ease. We all know people like this in real life.  Unlike the darker forms of stress-related trolling and puppetry that are in season late in the semester, the outlet provided by summer trolling seems flaccid and boring, rather than urgent or turgid.

Confirmation bias.

If you think you see a troll it is usually best to STFU and see what happens. If you absolutely must show off to the rest of the troll posse do so in the "Smug Offs" thread.

Or just post an aggressive snark, letting everyone know very clearly that you think they are a troll, but don't state it directly.  Then complain on other threads about the "troll posse".

If you think you see a troll it is usually best to STFU and see what happens.

Online convention is to simply post "DNFTT".  That way, someone who might have been about to craft a lengthy post might be prodded to at least consider the possibility that it might be a waste of their time.

If a friend or relative emails you some probable internet fake (eg, "Send you bottle tops to Larry C, so he can buy a heart-lung machine for his ailing gerbil"), the equivalent to "STFU" is to simply delete the message, while the equivalent to "DNFTT" is to reply with a link to Snopes.com.  Surely the latter is more responsible. - DvF

I don't know, but I'll go look for it. While we're at it, maybe we can convince Alan to bring the clue bat over from the venting thread for a few minutes.
