I have conflicting information.

Our Bb corporate trainer says don't bother--when you import the course, it will an unrecognizeable mess, and it is better to just start from scratch.

The Bb salespeople say it all magically appears just exactly how you created it in WebCT.

I am guessing the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Anyone have any experience or advice in this process?

FYI, nobody here really knows what's up. I am a sort of "test pilot"--switching course platforms in the Fall before the rest of the faculty does it for Spring.

I'm not sure about your situation, but when we went from WebCT CE to WebCT Vista, we were told that course importation was seamless. In fact, it was a mess. I'd bet the technicians are right: they're the ones who work with it and try to do the things they know customers want. In answer to your question, I think I'd try importation of ONE class first. If it works, great; do it with the rest. If it doesn't, you have one to fix and others to build from scratch.

Good luck.

There's a difference between Vista and switching completely to Bb.  I also suspect that it depends on your IT department.

I'd ask if they can delete and reestablish the course shell.  That way you can switch over your course and see what it looks like.  Take screen caps to serve as a horrible warning for other profs!  (I too doubt that it'll work well.)  But if you're assured you can wipe out that course and restart from the beginning, you have nothing to lose.

Our school transfered from WebCT to ANGEL and the truth was somewhere in the middle, but they mostly transfered with relatively few problems.

Yes. There were a few glitches, but it was not too bad. Most of the difficulties came from the fact that Blackboard Vista has so many new features and different ways of displaying the old ones that some things had to be redone.

Base on my experiences--back everything up and keep a bottle of tequila handy...
