I like it a lot. But I am a sucker for the Georgia typeface--one of the best serif faces in many years. I understand it was designed by MSFT for better readability on screens. But it also looks great in "real" print, too.

I think the new site looks like it's left well behind the days of handcoded HTML 3.0, and I mean this as a good thing. Looking forward to the beta becoming the new site.

I can't log in. Is anyone else having that problem?

Since the fora data was frozen in February 09 (including passwords and signature files), you'll have to use the password you were using in Feb 09 to log in under your regular username.

Or, you could just create a new username. Will it go >poof!< when the beta ends, or will it hang around? Dunno.

Ah, that explains much.

I'd kind of like to keep my new alt for special occasions...

Oh! The content of my post is right, but please excuse my writing error. The data WERE frozen. Sorry about that.

Hm. Since all the little datums were likely frozen en masse, are they not a data collective and therefore subject to the singular?

Prytania, the Foracle

« Reply #20 on: June 30, 2009, 08:23:27 AM »

I can sign in as Prytania3. I wonder if I could go back to regular Prytania. Probably not, as that rat who stoll my moniker stole it so many years ago and still won't man up to it.

Well, there is still only one Prytania, even if she is "Prytania3"--accept no substitutes.

The ads are too big. Even in the current format they are a little distracting, but going from old to beta makes me feel like they are shouting at me.

I've already posted several comments in the beta area itself, but I'll repeat the high points here.  The font is way too small, especially in the "post reply" screen.  Both my moniker and my real name appear on the screen, and at the same time.  (The "Hello infopri" is unchanged, but now there is a "Welcome, RealName" greeting on the right-hand side of the gray bar above the "Chronicle" banner.)  The content column is way too narrow (especially given all the unused gray space to the left and right of the "page") and/or the ad column is way too wide--and, if the page has to be asymetrical, the ads should be on the left.  The all-blue format harkens back to the earliest days of the web, and the index page is hard to read.

My overall impression so far:  The redesign is awful.  I'd have thought an operation like CHE would have much better web designers at its disposal.  My 21-year-old nephew designs better sites than the new fora.

I don't like the visible real name on the screen either, but I'm not that secretive about my identity either.
I would be interested to see the forumite details shown on each post changed to show "member since" rather than "number of posts". The current system of DSM status privileges the recently joined but verbally incontinent, while making long-term but reticent members look like "newbies".

I am not fond of it.

I will learn to be fond of it if the powers-that-be find a way to unsubscribe us from threads we posted to and then decided we disliked or what have you.

Chime.  I would really appreciate that feature, should it come to pass.

That feature might be implemented through the clever ploy of refusing to click on the "See New Replies to Your Posts" link, and/or ignoring those links that show up thereunder.  I suspect the only way to manage it otherwise is to have our posts deleted from the threads in question.  I don't think anybody will go for that idea.
