Hi, Folks. We’ve unveiled a limited sneak preview of the redesigned Chronicle Web site. It’s available at http://beta.chronicle.com. We’re not finished yet, but we wanted to get some feedback from our readers and users.

We’d love it if some Forums users put the site through its paces this week. Try to comment on an article or two. Make sure the Forums work as you expect. Try out the new site search (Unfortunately, it still doesn’t cover the Forums. We’re working on that.) Let us know what you like and what you don’t by sending a message to redesign@chronicle.com.

Couple things to keep in mind:

1. Not every part of the site is completed. If you run into something that doesn't seem done, please let us know by sending a message to redesign@chronicle.com.

2. You can log in using the same account name and password you use at chronicle.com. Or you can create a new free account. But any changes you make to your account at beta.chronicle.com (e.g., resetting your password, signing up for a newsletter, saving a job) won't be reflected back on chronicle.com.

3. Likewise, you can use the Forums at beta.chronicle.com by using the same login. But forum posts at this site are not synced up with those at chronicle.com.

4. During the sneak preview, you are not able to purchase new subscriptions or day passes at beta.chronicle.com. Existing subscribers and users at campuses with site licenses are able to see premium content at the new site.

Thanks.

The search function seems no better than it was. Is Vox in cahoots with you on that? So that only she has the magical search function powers?

It doesn't work for searching the forums yet. That will be the true test.

I will repeat my comment on the beta site.  I hate the narrow font.  It hurts to read it, even with glasses.  Also, the the ad sidebar on the right is disproportionately large.

Is this some evil plan on the part of The Chronicle to reduce forum usage?  If so, it will certainly be the case that I won't be visiting the fora much if the beta design stays.

FWIW, the search page looks exactly like the current one, so clearly no upgrade to that function is in the works.

What is wrong with the current forum design anyway?  It could use a few tweaks (like making it easier to paginate through threads and personal messages), but overall I think it works pretty well.  Just change the color scheme.

NARROW.  Please fix the extreme narrowness.

Weird.  I don't see narrow at all.  It looks great to me!  Very easy to read, very hip, very with it, very now.  The new site is quite 21st century.

I like it, gang!

Perhaps the narowness depends on browser or browser settings.   Very evident in the forums section when reading  a thread from my IE browser.

For me it wasn't just narrow - the fora contents were all squished on the left and if I widened my browser window, I just got gray columns on either side of the CHE frame.

Also, I didn't see the scroll bars everyone else was mentioning, which was a real shame because the text that I was typing as a comment kept disappearing of the right hand edge of the box.

The color scheme looks sleek, but now I am wondering how those blue bars would hold up for long term viewing.

Maybe I should just go focus on my Word document instead of playing online.

It is very similar-looking for me in Mac OSX Safari and Firefox.  The only difference is that the grey bands on the sides are narrower in Safari because Safari doesn't fill my screen as Firefox does.

The most noticeable functional, as opposed to aesthetic, problems are the tiny tiny type of the quoted boxes and the distracting ad/job/white column.  I don't think I've ever seen type that small on a website, only in credit card agreements.

It looks generic.  The CHE news content parts look good, though.

The narrower font is rather hard on the eyes.  Many of us are ... how to put this delicately? ... of a certain age.  Mayn't we keep the current font?

I'll try to get on again for a better look, though.  This was my first impression, a rather quick one.

I had that problem. I ended up creating a new account and then pontificating at length. I begin to see the joys of sockitude.
