We had good luck with the Ibis hotels (run by Novotel) in several UK cities (Hull, Northampton, Sheffield).  The London ones aren't terribly central, but the prices are good and the standard of cleanliness and convenience is high.

There's a huge ibis/novotel in Hammersmith which is incredibly convenient for the Piccadilly Line out to Heathrow.
