Talking to HS Students about Online Courses
«

I have been tapped to give a presentations to HS Juniors/Seniors about taking online courses at our CC. I am looking for suggestions on how to make this a great presentation.
I live in one of those big sparsely populated states, so distance learning partnerships with high schools are pretty widespread. As I understand it, my purpose is to inform them about how online courses work, but also to show them how cool our online courses are. Kind of like an orientation AND a recruiting pitch.
Any suggestions on how to make this engaging? I DO have enthusiasm for this stuff, so that will get me half way there.

Ask your colleagues for some of their more interesting/fun assignments (videos, activities and the like?) Then demo those. You might consider making a demo course that students can log into and play with showing them some of these cool assignments.
(Just thinking out loud...)

A demo course is a great idea!
Be sure to use your presentations as an opportunity to help students make informed decisions about whether they would be ready for an online class and/or or tips for success if they would enroll in one. Getting the right students into online classes (those who are ready and able to succeed online) is important for retention both within a course and from semester to semester. I would pose the challenges to taking an online class not as barriers, but as something the students could deal with, especially with the "inside" information that you share with them.
