This has been covered here in some ways, but there are some specifics that I'm unclear on.

Just got an offer for a TT job at a neato little CC - very exciting, hooray!  My SO is in a completely different field.  I asked them for some time; they've given me a week.  Here are my questions:

1) all of my interactions have been through a woman in HR.  So do I go through her with the spousal negotiations or do I go through the department?

2) I'm not 100% clear on how to bring it up.  I was thinking something along the lines of "I'm very interested in the position, but one concern is employment for my partner, who is a professor of Basketweaving.  May I send you his cv, or can you put me in contact with someone from the Basketweaving department?"  I've scoured this thread several times and I haven't seen any specific wording.  Link me if I'm missing it, please.   

3) I'm also not sure how to phrase it to make it clear that the spousal hire is not a deal-breaker.  Or shouldn't I? 

Stupidly, none of my job market books really have any advice on this.  And all of our library's copies of Getting to Yes are checked out, so I might have to hit a bookstore early tomorrow morning.   

It seems as though these processes might be different for CCs in general, but I'm not sure.   I'm still a little shell-shocked, so sorry if any of this is stupid or unclear.

The wording you suggest in (2) is very good.  It's close to what I've seen work here at HappySLAC.  You're exploring your options without committing either way (and certainly without backing out of the offer).

The more research I do, the more cautiously optimistic I am.  Their Basketweaving department is massive, they have many classes booked for fall that have the instructor marked as "to-be-announced," they're listed as currently hiring Basketweaving adjuncts on the HR website...  I'm going to call and talk to the woman in the morning. 

I think the sooner they know, the sooner they can start working whatever magic they have.

Good work on the research, Smithfieldmuse.   You definitely need to strike while the iron is hot (call early in the morning), and I completely agree with YT, the (2) option is perfect.

What systeme_d and YT have said!  Congrats on the new job, SM.  Here's hoping that the Basketweaving department welcomes your SO with open arms!
