As Blackboard acquires yet another competitor, I was hoping the legal or financial-sector savvy among you could explain to me why eliminating all competition doesn't violate anti-trust laws.

Antitrust laws are administered by judges and lawyers, therefore, they don't have hard and fast rules and they don't make sense.  Company A can violate all of the patents of their competitors to run them out of business and that can easily win an antitrust suit and Company B can come up with a more efficient process that makes their products cheaper, but obey all laws and do nothing underhanded and be ruled a monopoly in restraint of trade.
