Does anyone know if it is possible to be full-time in more than one college  if both are in different states? One is tenured-track and the onther all online.

Usually you have to disclose any and all additional jobs to the TT college (not sure about the online college); otherwise it could be grounds for automatic termination.

If you search the Chronicle archives you will find stories of people getting in trouble for exactly this. But they're just the ones who got caught.

Actually in the Google era you couldn't not get caught. Go check your faculty handbook but also ask a trusted senior colleague how this will be perceived when you go up for tenure.

My last job seemed to be cursed in that area.  I m aware of 3 instances where we hired a full timer who held another job for a while.  The first was found pretty quickly.  He worked (on paper) full time for us and the next closes university 80 miles away.  It was also a state university and he was found out pretty quickly. I think that both places fired him.

The second was (on paper) ABD and we gave him all sorts of accommodation to allow him to finish his degree.  The problem was that he was teaching a full load there and was only working on the PhD part time to start with!  His contract was not renewed.

The third was foreign.  They were teaching for us  for about 3 years, was granted tenure and then requested a leave so that he could return to their other job (where they were currently on unpaid leave) to put in another year so that they qualify for retirement.  They were given an ultimatum to deliver a letter of resignation for the other school and refused a leave.

Now, none of these were for online schools, but we do have a form that we have to complete declaring all of our outside employment.

I did this and got away with it for a calendar year but the actual overlap was only one semester (2 of 3 at Univ A and 2 of 3 at B College).  Neither employer had any restrictions to the best of my knowledge.  There could easily have been something in some handbook somewhere but nothing in anything I signed my name to.  Actually one of the jobs was 3/4 time.  It was extremely difficult but on balance it was worth it as I saved $50k in nine months.  I'm still at one of those jobs:  the better one!

Uh, because it's hard to live on $38,000/year as a first year TT professor.

Our uni. has a handbook policy against this. Anyone caught would immediately be fired.

Hiya, Coachjay! Hope you're still in your favorite university and/or favorite city!

I was under the impression that coachjay was in a very cheap part of the country.  In middle America, one could have a decent apartment, a steady diet of pizza and beer, AND health insurance for 38k a year.

It's still challenging to pay off that $50-100K in student loans on that kind of salary.... : )

Not everyone got a free ride in grad school.

Have you ever had a full-time academic position? There is a huge amount of work involved which is why schools have the rules about not having outside employment.

My place has a rule against this.  My last place fired someone, mid-term, for doing this.  And we haven't offered $38K for a tt job to a social scientist holding a PhD in 10 years, and we're in flyover country.

Don't do it.  You'll risk losing both jobs.

Enough moral posturing already. Lots of people in this country have held two FT jobs! For some folks near the bottom of the economic ladder it is a multi-generational way of life. There is nothing scandalous or morally wrong with doing so, so long as you are not slacking off on either job.

But as a practical matter, your college almost certainly has a rule against it, and you almost certainly will get caught.
