So before anyone jumps on me about using the search function (which I did), I want a bit more recent information.

Can anyone comment on the college of engineering?  I know they have an ERC and seem to have built up a solid research program in some departments (electrical/mechanical) while other departments appear weak (chemical/civil).  However, I noticed they have a new Dean and some new upper administrators.  They are also hiring a large number of new faculty.

I don't have specific questions, just wanted some insight into the politics/growth/commitment to research.

A good friend did their PhD in one of the weak depts you mention. It was a miserable experience for them and has affected their entire career. I of course only have the grad student side, but there were a lot of nasty politics and a theoretical commitment to research that wasn't backed up by actions.

But of course there is always the possibility that my friend was a troublemaker or something and thus brought it all down on themselves so YMMV.

I have nothing specific to offer on the engineering program there, but I interviewed there (Health Sciences) a few years back.  There was a new president coming in at that time and there was a reported major push on research.  From hearing about the transition in faculty there in my area over the last few years, there certainly appears to be a push to bringing in faculty with substantial grant related work.

From a "grapevine" source, Northeastern wants to match BU and BC as elite institutions in Boston.
