Hello,

I am trying secure employment as an adjunct (I have just wrapped up my PhD). My understanding is that most adjunct jobs are not widely advertised and a generally filled by people living in the local area. But then of course some positions are advertised on the various jobs sites (including the Chronicle's). I am wondering if these ads are targeted at and mainly replied to by people living locally, or if it is common for people to relocate for adjunct work, as one does for full-time work? My feeling is that, barring unusual circumstances, it makes little sense to relocate to another part of the country for contingent, part-time work. Is that the consensus? In which case I can save time by not applying for the jobs that aren't in my area of the country (Southern California), which anyway has plenty of colleges that I can solicit for adjunct work.

Thanks

I think your instincts are correct. I can't imagine it would be worth it to move for an adjunct position, and I've never known anyone who has. Since you're already in an area with a good number of schools, it sounds wise to stay put and start networking there.

I did last year - sublet my place in Universityville, and rented a room in Teachingtown. It was good teaching experience and I got to bank a little cash.

It really depends on your situation, how mobile you are, and how much work you are offered at the Far Away University.

I'm crafting cold-call letters right now for adjunct gigs at various places, some of which are halfway across the country. Most of the universities in my area save their part time positions for their own grad students, so I'm fairly certain I won't be able to make a liveable wage here. Undergrad colleges, though, don't have their own grad students. Enter Grassy.
