I've just read an excerpt, at Google books, of Solway's The Turtle Hypodermic of Sickenpods, and wonder whether it has had any influence here.

I feel I've been very influenced by it.  I cite it in my Authoritative Somatology of Kinetic Allotropes (VDM, forthcoming).

I suspect no one here with the sole exception of yourself has even heard of it.  What's it about, and how would it influence us?  More to the point, what would it influence us to do, and would we regret it afterwards (when we were no longer under the influence)?

Well, I had to look.

My favorite sentence from the official promo copy:

"Solway claims that nothing of genuine and productive import comes out of theories."

So, that settles that.  I'm allerting the allotropes.

I want one, too!

"accurate killer heuristic"

Is the word "heuristic" ever used outside of a theoretical context?

I had a pet heuristic once, but it crawled behind the washer-dryer and died.

It also says this: "To do this, we need to develop an accurate killer heuristic to identify and monitor threats to our vocational well-being and effectiveness."

If that isn't theory, what is it?

See, if you had had the killer variety, it would have had better instincts.

I always thought a heuristic was "something like an algorithm, but not as organized."  That's me, except for the part about being like an algorithm.  Do I qualify as a semi-heuristic?

Mr. Solway discusses his most recent views, reflecting on the sickenpods and other less congenial efflangencies, here:

Favorite quotation:  "After all, Leonardo Di Caprio's good looks didn't save him any more than our know-how and ethical fervor will save us."

Indeed.

I love the title, and even though I generally have no use for Cultural Studies this kind of thing, I now intend to read the book. - DvF
