I was in Lausanne recently--what I saw looked promsing, lots of folks in clubs, the Olympic Museum, and only ~35min or so from Geneva Airport. That is, what I saw from my cab: I got food poisoning either in Zurich airport or on the flight over from the states. So I can say my hotel, the name of which I forget, was very nice. There seemed to be lots of things I wanted to see and do in Lausanne, so it might be a bit more hoppin' than Geneva.

As boring as Switzerland is, though, I will say this: they do stop for pedestrians in x-walks. Most amazing thing I have seen in my life.

Can one visit CERN? That would be totally awesome.

Never done this, so I don't know how canned the material is or how good the docents and tours are.  You can't get a look at the main accelerator tunnel, but if they do it right there would be plenty to see.  Tours like this can run from tedious to awesome depending on the approach of the institution.

Nobody actually goes to Switzerland for its cities (even though cities like Bern and Zurich are lovely). You go to Switzerland for skiing (in winter), or hiking end to enjoy the wonderful nature and mountains.
Some other go to Switzerland to take care of their money.
I've never heard of anyone going to Switzerland to go clubbing...

I was there a couple of years back for a few days to attend a UN conference. I really enjoyed it. One nice bonus was (I don't know if they still do this), visitors were given at all hotels a free public transport card for the days they were staying, so buses and trams were free.
The science museum was small but interesting, there are of course other museums too. I also took a cruise on the lake which included a FABULOUS steak lunch, and the views were very pretty.
I was expecting it to be ridiculously expensive, but was pleasantly surprised. It was the same price or less than what I would pay for things in the UK.
I thought it was beautiful, and didn't find it boring at all.

And should you be driving, it would behoove you to stop as well. Pedestrians don't look for traffic at crosswalks, they just charge across.

I loved the Château de Chillon - it's in Veytaux, near Montreux, which I recall is about an hour from Geneva.

Thrilling experience, irrespective of whether you're obsessed with interested in Byron and Shelley, as I am.

Thanks for all the lovely banter and suggestions, folks.

It's as bad as that, eh? Well I think I can put up with reading, writing, and hanging out by the lake for a week. I'll just depress my expectations and if I do manage to scare up a good time in a hipster bar somewhere, I'm sure we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

I'm just a little surprised that anyone who has a chance to spend some time in Switzerland would want to waste it in bars. The whole thing about Alps is walking in them. That doesn't leave a bunch of energy for night life.

Maybe you have heard of Dada. The club where that was spawned was Cabaret Voltaire. In stuffy old Zurich. So there's a tradition. Zurich has also been a pickup mecca for gay cruisers, with a nook of the city set aside for that purpose.

I've always wondered what city in Europe was the bland kind of midwestern place not packed with historical sites to be in wonder of. In the US we have many of these cities (St. Louise for me was definitely this way). Nice places, but not much fun for a tourist. Now I know. Geneva is the bland capital of Europe!

I'm just a little surprised that you're just a little surprised. I've been walking in the French and Italian Alps. So, I think I can give the Swiss Alps a miss this time round, no?

I'm going for work. I won't have time to do much of anything besides meet with folks, write, present findings and hopefully hang out in the sun with my colleagues in an urban setting.

Give me break: I'm unashamedly looking for nightlife!

I was there a couple of weeks ago.  Stunning, phenomenal.  I want to buy it.

And now I see a job ad in Geneva.  hmmm...
