I am currently at the stage of picking the right adviser for my graduate study. I really like this one professor but he will be on sabbatical during the first year of my study. However, he promised that he will be in contact with me through email.

Do you think that having an adviser on sabbatical is detrimental to my study?

FYI, I am in the life sciences.

Well if the first year of the program is really course heavy and your potential advisor has upper level students or postdocs who could help you get going in the lab, I wouldn't say it is the end of the world. Especially if you are doing a PhD and he will be there for the vast majority of your degree. If you are doing a masters degree only though, it might be bad for him to be gone for half the time you are there...
