So?

Dear all,

As some of you have heard/read the UAE University is aiming at becoming one of the top 100 research-oriented universities in the world within the next 5 years. As this is quite a very ambitious target, and probably the only serious attempt from a local university that I know, I would like please to know your opinion about its possibility, necessary steps, previous experiences, etc, taking into accounts all the special characteristics of the region.

Thank you very much.

NS

Over two years has passed since this original post.  How is UAE university doing?  By now it should be 40% the way up the rankings to it's top 100 goal.

My goodness, that was an exceptionally good analysis of the forum.

Not even close untenured. Very very disappointing performance by Provost Rory Hume et al. In fact, we all think UAEU is going backwards because of all the disruptions, bizarre eratic decisions and about-faces management is doing. UAEU has now reached its hiatus.

It reminds me of that George Clooney film, The Perfect Storm, where at the end , his boat couldn't quite get over that monster wave. Time to abandon ship!!!

Thanks for the update.  Needless to say I'm not surprised by the news.  This is not because of negative reports from UAEU, although they may certainly be relevant.  Rather, the fact is that climbing up the university ranking ladder is extremely difficult.  Perception of rank is based so much on prestige.  Prestige in academia takes years if not decades to construct.   I thought OP was nuts for even seriously considering the question.

OP hasn't been active since November 2010, so we probably wont hear from him or her again.
