I know that in my discipline hiring was great in the past 5 years, but has been cut to almost nil now.  Of course I'd love an academic position, but my discipline is limited to only large universities in Canada. I could possibly transfer over to the UK, but I think the US would be a hard market for me to break. I am feverishly working on my Plan B.

My area of study isn't esoteric, but it's fallen out of favour - History Departments these days want experts on Asia and the Middle East, not Europe/UK.

Definite ditto here.  The UK is prohibitively expensive, though, even in Scotland and Wales.  Sigh.

Because, you know, that stuff on the syllabus is like, in writing, and there are so many ways you can, like, read that, but when the guys who sit by you in class, like, you know, must know what's really going on, right? -- AmLitHist, channelling student

I'll bet you won't be able to for too much longer!

"Bleak" doesn't begin to express how bad it is here... Atrocious, catastrophic, disastrous, horrific--these are a bit closer.

38 job apps sent out this year. blah...

I wondered that as well -- aren't there only like 16 universities in Canada?

A few more than that ... but still, 38 listings in one field? Wow - can't be the humanities.

Not only are job prospects bleak in Canada, so is the quality of education for students!

Depends on the field, as always, but it's true that there have been a lot of pulled searches, positions that should be tenure-track that are offered as LTAs/VAPs instead, and that quite a number of places have frozen hiring (including replacement positions). But, there are some areas -- often those that are separately funded (from grant money, for example) -- where hires are going ahead, including at my own hard-hit institution. I'm not sure it's quite as bleak in Canada as elsewhere, but it's also not good.

All we can do is keep teaching and keep publishing, so that we'll be irresistible when things get better.

My apologies for the miscommunication. I applied to 38 jobs in Canada AND the US, and most of those positions were in the US. There were only about 4 in my field in Canada. Come to think of it, many of the positions that I applied to weren't quite in my field, but closely related or broad enough to include.

That is, anything broadly in the "Humanities"...
