A friend forwarded me this link. He said he knew the author from graduate school. I don't know what appalled me more - the article or itself or the response from many people in North Dakota who saw nothing wrong with any of this. http://www.und.nodak.edu/org/bridges/brown.html

The hockey stadium cost $100 million?
I didn't think the entire state cost that much, let alone one stadium.
Seriously, it's easy to pooh-pooh all the upset over the appropriation of Native American culture when one isn't a Native American. One of the best analogies I've heard was that if the Cleveland Indians were the Cleveland Negros, and their mascot was an African American throwing a spear, you'd have riots. When it's a buck-toothed Native American, everyone seems to think it's just peachy.

What I have always wondered is why aren't the Irish mad at Notre Dame? I mean, portraying the Irish as drunken, belligerent, leprechauns? Obviously that isn't feeding into any stereotypes or anything.

I am so sad to think that people cannot find a way to be respectful to others about something as silly as the name of a sports team.
Letting go of a name, an attitude, a way of thinking about others, and a way of punishing people who deserve nothing more than a clear path and a kind glance seems so obvious a means of growing and improving themselves as well.
But if they can't see that, they can't see anything worth seeing.

Same goes for stereotypes of farmers from the Midwest, white trash in Tennesee, and Rednecks in Texas.
Prejudice sucks. And North Dakota sucks too.

That was from 2001. Any updates on the situation.
PS. I read about a trip some indigenous people made to Ireland. They made common cause around how they were treated.
By the way, who is "Mr.Engelstad" and what did he do to merit the arena being named after him?
As to other names of teams, the Notre Dame team is called the "Fighting Irish" but as far as I know the Irish in America were never conquered and massacred like the indigenous people were. And another team, The Fighting Illini commemorates a nation, the Illini, who were peaceful people.

He's "a former UND goalie whose donations to the school included $100 million for a hockey arena." Link contains an update.

Correct, as usual, TZ. That's because you are not Dude. TZ, however, is Dude. TZ is my favorite. I wish YOU began with A.

Thanks, good on UND for taking action.
I just wish the Cleveland and Atlanta baseball teams, the Washington football team and the UIIUC teams would also make the change.

As has been pointed out before, the Cleveland AL baseball team took its name *in honor* of WWI-era Native American star Louis Sockalexis. This was an honor... oh what the heck...

So the logo represents what this star looked like? I rather doubt it.
