I protest!  Unseen University is not listed!

Ack!  How could any list be considered complete without Unseen University?  The Dean alone should have propelled UU to a top twenty ranking and the Archchancellor should make it be in the top ten.

Or Miskatonic?

Really, you are all being so unkind to the OP, who has so generously shared the fruits of his, erm, deliberations.  I mean, he's grappling with some of the key questions of our vocation, our moment, the day:

I also think this is incredibly valuable research, yellowtractor. Sure, at first glance, a comparison of university rankings over the past thousand years seems pointless, but when you consider how long it takes some people to complete a doctorate...

That's right.  What our colleagues are missing is that ranking is dynamic, is in fact a dynamic projection of self onto institutional culture.  It's like taking charge of the shadow cone produced by a solar eclipse and using it as an instrument of precision discernment.  Think of the rankings themselves as the brightly-flaring corona of our sun, obscured by the moon's dark disc.  Do not look directly into the sun.

I love the arguments raised in this thread.  I think it'll be useful for my methods class.

1.  Past lists suck.
2.  Here is my list.  It's great.
3.  People who question my list are nationalists.
4.  Because nationalists question my work, my work is therefore valid.

This method is going to make my thesis so much easier.

More to the point:  what "what" is the then?  What and also is the it of the when, the for of the also?

The audacity, the rabbit, the well.  The pathos.  The existential shock and awe.

this is further proved by the fact that such attacks suddenly flared up in three forums in a similar manner in the same day

Well, you could conclude that space aliens are monitoring your posts in every forum in the world, and are zapping persecutorial ideas into the bains of participants of each of these fora when you post, as part of the intergalactic conspiracy against your genius.  Or, you could take the Occam's Razor approach. - DvF

What explanation could possibly be simpler than that?

Seriously, as idiotic as the exercise of putting schools in a linear order is to begin with, this one is absolutely the worst I've seen yet. - DvF

Agreed.  Further, despite all the hub-bub about avoiding bias, the rankings omit any consideration of social sciences, humanities, and other important areas.

Nothign was omitted, they are all grouped in the "Arts". Anything wrong about it? Some negative reactions are anticipated as such an international ranking are bond to offend many nationalists.

Umm... yeah.  LOTS wrong about it, sorry.  The fact that this is even a question, though, reveals more than I need to know about the rankings, the post, etc.

So, I prefer to rank schools based on their squirrel populations.

My undergraduate had a decent squirrel population, and they were cute and fuzzy with nice fluffy tails.   Grad school had more chipmunks than squirrels, and they often made an appearance as roadkill.

My current campus is remarkably low-ranked on the squirrel-rankings because we are rather squirrel-depopulated, which I find odd since we have deer, geese and other assorted wildlife.   Our squirrels are also of the "never cute" variety since they are perpetually waifish and tend to have scraggly tails which I do not find aesthetically pleasing.  They are rather like "heroin-chic" squirrels, actually.  Not cool.
