The US has been a great place to put your money for the past 50 years. The likelihood it stays that way for the next 50 years is..... Roll dice.

Abandoning the rest of the world is foolish.

I have realized that I need to take a more active role in my retirement account.  Right now, I have my purchase distribution as 100% stocks because they are cheap right now.  When the market rallies and these funds move back up near their historical highs, I plan on 'banking' the stocks into safer funds.  When the stock market is soaring, I plan on buying bonds and annuities.  If I had done this before, I would have ridden out recessions very well.  True, I would have missed some of the profit from the top end of the stock cycle, but I would be better off because I wouldn't have had many stocks in the portfolio when the market crashed.

In other words, buy low, sell high.

Yes, but when I started working, my 401k funds did not really have an option to 'sell', only to buy. I couldn't easily change my 'buy' distribution or shift assets from one financial instrument to another.  With online tools, I now have more control over my retirement fund.  I unfortunately did not realize this had changed until it was too late this time around.  I wish I had figured this out the last time the stocks crashed.
