My experience with HERC is that there are very few posting in my field, and nothing at all that I haven't already seen elsewhere (Science Jobs, CHE Jobs, Nature Jobs, Higher ed Jobs, and my discipline-specific sites).  In fact. I'll echo what Lewisbasic wrote that, at least in the Sciences, they have a tendency to keep on posting expired jobs, and often seem to start posting jobs close to, or after, the deadline.

My understanding from various HR departments is that schools can send jobs to HERC if they think they will be hard to fill, just as they can post to numerous sites.  HERC also searches school sites and posts jobs and some of these may be expired or past a due date.

If you are referred to HERC in regards to the spousal hire situation, it may be the HR department trying to be helpful and referring you to a source of job listings more targeted to academia than, for instance, Monster.  So it is akin to having a higheredjobs.com search but with a narrower geographical focus.

Thanks for the info. So searching a regional HERC is just the same as searching Chronicle jobs limiting it to a particular state. They're not giving priority to spouses. I'll apply then.

(reviving since I searched for HERC and nothing more recent seems to have been said about them).

I found a job in my field advertised on HERC and am thinking about applying. But I was confused whether they are supposed to be jobs for "anyone" or jobs for spouses of people already employed by members of the consortium. I hadn't seen the job anywhere else, so I didn't know if this was an "inside search" or something.

(the fact that this is in the 2 body thread makes me think their focus is arranging spousal hires)

The HERC's in general focus on dual career resources.
From their weppage:
Quote
Mission
In the spring of 2007, HERC established a national organization to help support the mission and objectives of the regional HERCs. The mission of the National HERC is to facilitate national strategic initiatives that help the regional HERCs accomplish their goals and to promote HERC-wide visibility. The mission of the regional HERCs is to advance the efforts of their member institutions to recruit and retain outstanding and diverse faculty and staff and to assist dual career couples.

Their other resources for dual career couples are good, but their job boards are really not.
