Hi all,
Has anyone had any success getting a job via HERC? Is this just another way of compiling local job listings, or do the partner schools help one another out when it comes to spousal hires?

Is that a private business or a non-profit?

Hold your fire. It's not a commercial site, and I think the question is legit.
Unfortunately, I can't answer it, since I haven't dealt with HERC before. It looks like the kind of thing where a critical mass of institutional buy-in would be important. They started in Northern California, and the OP was asking about a job there.

I think this is a legit question.
In my area (NOT Northern California), the HERC is lame. It seems that the "participating" institutions dropped the ball on posting all of their jobs there, which makes it not so useful.

I don't know what this means. Are you suggesting I am employed by HERC? Harhar.
I was asking about HERC, because I wanted to know whether anyone knew about them/it. I suspected that it was just a way for schools to act as though they care about spousal issues without having to actually do anything concrete about two-body problems.

Well, if you work for them... you need to step it up! Okay, my experience was that I first heard about HERC through human resources at an interview. I'm married to a non-academic who has lots of generally useful skills, and who wouldn't mind using them at a university, so I checked it out. When I went to the site, I discovered that the job I had interviewed for was never posted there, nor were several other jobs I had applied for that also happened to be in the area. HERC, are you listening?

Thanks to those of you who responded to my query. Based on those responses, it sounds like HERC is of little use.

It seems to me that you have had exactly one response from someone with personal experience, and that sample set is a little too small for this kind of generalization. One person has said that a particular regional HERC is not helpful, and I believe that. I also don't think that the Bay Area HERC would be as strong as it is (1300+ jobs posted at this moment) if it didn't work for the institutions involved. The Five Colleges consortium and the Claremont schools also seem to work well together. Much seems to depend on the particular HERC. YMMV.

I don't think it's fair to say whether or not it's useful yet. I did a brief search on the website and found some interesting jobs posted. If I were you, I'd be as open as possible to different job search websites and check them periodically.

I found and ended up getting a job via HERC that at the time wasn't listed anywhere else. It seems some institutions are really good about using it and others aren't. Can't hurt to include in in your regular scan for job listings.

I haven't had any luck with HERC (Norcal, St. Louis, etc.). A lot of the jobs are announced after the closing date for applications, and a lot of jobs from member institutions are never announced through HERC.

(reviving since I searched for HERC and nothing more recent seems to have been said about them).
I found a job in my field advertised on HERC and am thinking about applying. But I was confused whether they are supposed to be jobs for "anyone" or jobs for spouses of people already employed by members of the consortium. I hadn't seen the job anywhere else, so I didn't know if this was an "inside search" or something.
(the fact that this is in the 2 body thread makes me think their focus is arranging spousal hires)
