I'll be in San Diego at a conference in mid-April (the week after Easter), and was wondering if the kind folks here have any suggestions for what not to miss in that city. I am also interested in finding out if any other forumites will be at the conference (AERA/NCME) or just happen to be in the area for that time period.

I'll be there--with bells (or something) on. I'd love to try for a mini-meetup with whoever else will be there :).
There's lots of stuff to do in San Diego. The beaches, the zoo, Sea World and the Gaslamp Quarter are the best-known tourist things, of course. And one used to take the trolley to Tijuana, but that's gotten to be a bit more of an edge sport. What kinds of things do you like to do?

Don't get your hopes up for the beach in April. San Diego springs can actually be chilly and rainy. It doesn't have the same weather patterns as say, Florida.

Walk on Coronado Beach. Oh, I see Pry mentioned the weather can be bad...but just walking on it can be v. nice.

Go to the Birch Aquarium. Check out Balboa Park. The zoo, if that's your thing. If it's rainy, try the big mall, Horton Plaza. Drive over to Coronado. Walk around downtown La Jolla and window shop. Look at the seals at Seal Beach. Go antique shopping in Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach. People watch in Mission Beach. Go to Old Town for Mexican food. Go up to Del Mar. Too bad you'll be in between seasons at the La Jolla Playhouse.

If you are into nature, take a hike through Torrey Pines State Park/Beach. La Jolla is not too far away and has a nice walk along the rocky beach and low cliffs in addition to the shopping that paddington mentions. You'll need to rent a car to do most things in San Diego. I disagree a bit with Prytania about the weather. San Diego has the nearest to perfect weather year round of any place on earth. It is almost always cooler at the beaches here that's why people go there in the summer. You almost always need a jacket or a sweatshirt at the beach if there before 10:00 AM or after 3:00 PM.

Great! We'll have to try to figure out a good time to set that up. Thanks for all the great suggestions. Right now I'm not sure if it will be just me or if my husband and daughter will come. I'm less worried about things to do if I'm flying solo (always plenty of drinking partners!), but if they come I want to be sure my daughter enjoys herself. Nature, site seeing, pleasant walking routes or scenic areas... she finds pleasure in almost everything she does. I'm making a lot of notes here, so thanks!!

I will be there as well! I've visited San Diego once before during April and the weather was wonderful. There is a lot to do in the city, as others have noted already - hiking, zoo trips, etc. The trolley is fairly easy to use and I think there is a ticket you can by that lets you travel on all of the different public transportation in a certain amt. of time. I'm sure you can find out this information by doing a general search. Enjoy!

I will be there. Chairing some sessions, giving an award, enjoying sea air. Going to the model railroad museums. Staying in Little Italy. On a quest for the perfect margarita. -TM

If anyone is interested in meeting up we should figure out when we'll all be there. I'll be around Sunday night - Wednesday night (flying back Thursday morning). Out of those, Tuesday is busiest for me.

I'm arriving on Sunday, and leaving again on either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning. My days are jam-packed Monday through Wednesday until 8 p.m.
Can others meet at 8:30 or so on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday? Or will we all be in on Sunday evening?

I might be able to make an evening meet up. It is a bit of a stretch but if work is not too hectic, I might be willing to try to give it a try.

I visited San Diego twice (both times in November, though). I enjoyed visiting the Old Town area--especially the restaurant that served enormous margaritas. Sorry I can't recall its name, but I consumed one of those margaritas and now suffer from margarita-induced memory loss (maybe something with "Pancho" in the name?? I could point to it on a map, but can't remember its name!). The cab ride back to our hotel after consuming those margaritas was interesting, to be sure--the cab driver took us to a hotel in downtown, when, in fact, we were staying at a seaside resort. You might imagine the rest of that story!
My SO spent a day on a deep sea fishing charter, too, so that might be something to look into, if you have the time and are not prone to mal de mer. There are many other family-oriented activities--biking, hiking, museums--and, not too far up the coast, amusement parks at Long Beach and elsewhere. ENJOY!!

Sunday night is probably best for me, though I could probably meet up Monday night or Wednesday night for a little while. Tuesday night is no good for me. It sounds like at least a few of us may be able to get together! Anyone have idea about where to do so?

Since the conference is nearly upon us, I thought I'd bump the thread. Thanks again for all the great suggestions about how to enjoy San Diego, and please do post or PM if you'd like to get together. I wish I knew the area, but I have no good suggestions for where to meet up.
