Hello all,

I've read older posts, and I think I have some understanding about the way that UK positions, including Fellowships or Lecturerships, stack up to similar positions in the U.S.  If Fellowships are usually temporary (1-3 years), how often are people who have Fellowships (in this case a one-year with light teaching, time for research) able to make the jump to a Lecturer position in the same department?  Does this vary greatly by institution?

If there is an open position, and you are qualified to fill it, and already get on well with your colleagues, there's no reason why you shouldn't.

If you have some, er, personality issues with any of your colleagues (whether it's on your side, theirs, or genuinely a mutually bad fit) you may be better off applying elsewhere.

Sometimes fellowships are advertised with the hope of securing funding for a new Lectureship in the future, or even with the intent to make it permanent (but no promise to the incumbent, in case they don't work out - there are also fellowships that will definitely transition to permanent, such as the RCUK fellowships, but I take it you aren't talking about those. Sometimes, however, they are a compromise where the department really wants a new permanent person and the university says no to funding it.

DrSpouse,

Thanks for the reply.

I am waiting to see what the U in question says.  I suspect the chances that I will be able to line up a permanent position post-Fellowship are very small.
