Inspired by another thread, I thought I would begin a list of journals that represent milestones in one's discipline.
For me, publication in the following yields a greater chance of having a book published by a prestigious academic press, funding for a related project, invitations to give talks for pay at other institutions, citations out the wazoo, and a week-long version of the happy dance:
PMLA American Literature Victorian Studies Americna Literary History ELH
What would the journals be for you? And, just as important, what would publication in them mean?

What would the journals be for you? - The New York Mirror
- Godey's Lady's Book
And, just as important, what would publication in them mean? That I had built a time-machine...or have been outed as a vampire. <Thought I'd spoof my own post.>

I'm cracking up at the Godey's Lady's Book. What I wouldn't give to have appeared in the Whip or the National Police Gazette.
For me: American Quarterly Journal of American History American Historical Review

Yep, add the "William and Mary Quarterly" and "The New England Quarterly" for me.

The Journal of Religion The Journal of Theological Studies Zeitschrift für Theologie und Kirche Journal of Ecclesiastical History
There would be more depending on which crowd you run in or what you study in particular, but these are some of the most broadly respected. Modern Theology and Scottish Journal of Theology might go up there too, but I think of the above list as more consistent overall.
