Have any of you ever experienced this? It's a fear of buttons. Voxy had pointed out several months ago that my aversion to buttons was actually a documented phobia, but because I've managed it my whole life without too much trouble, I didn't really dig into it. But I can't sleep tonight, and my "button thing" came up on another thread, so I figured I'd do some googling. Turns out that this can be a pretty big deal for a lot of people. Just read the testimonials. koumpounophobiaAnd you know what's weird? The clear plastic dress shirt buttons with four holes are unanimously noted as being the worst kind. I totally get that. Anyone else out there in Chronicle-Land who has experienced this?

I am astonished. I thought I knew a bunch of the standard phobias and this one is a new one on me. I must add it to my vocabulary, along with triskaidekophobia.

What is Koumpounophobia?
Koumpounophobia is a phobia of buttons. I will not use the "b" word again as a lot of sufferers do not even like to read the word. I had no idea. But I guess the internet means that no one need suffer alone, so long as one other person with an internet connection has the same illness and creates a page.

I know you're being witty and smart, but it's true. It does make me feel a lot less weird about it.
Although, unlike most of the people who posted testimonials on that page, I'm not particularly embarrassed by it. In fact, I kind of like having something kooky about me. But maybe it's because I don't find it as debilitating as some of the others.
A strange, and somewhat awkward, coincidence - last winter, one of my aunts asked me if I would take care of her "things" when she passes away. One of the special "things" she wants me to take care of is her button collection. She wants to make sure it goes to someone who will love it like she does.

No, I meant it unironically and with no disrespect. My apologies if it seemed otherwise. It is moving to read post after post from people expressing a delight that they are not alone.

Makes me wonder how you got along with this aunt when you were a kid! Good luck, Grassy. I'm just glad I don't suffer from aulophobia.

Do NOT watch the film Coraline. Or I guess do watch it if you want to totally freak yourself out.

I just learned the name of my phobia about crossing the street is "agyrophobia," a word derived from the Greek "gyrus" (turning or whirling) and the Greek "phobos" (fear). The first letter, "a," is privative--that is, it creates a negative. Thus, an agyrophobiac shuns or avoids the whirl of traffic. And all this time I thought it was "ydidchiknxroadaphobia." Agryrophobia would make sense for someone who feared roundabouts perhaps. I wouldn't say that our traffic whirls. This word would be better suited to a fear of whirling dervishes or the Tasmanian devil if you ask me.
