"A nasty family fight among the state's community colleges became a public divorce Monday as a state association of the schools voted to expel its largest member, Metropolitan Community College.

The 10-2 vote by the Nebraska Community College Association's board came after months of dispute over a new formula for distributing nearly $90 million a year in state aid.

The vote came after Metro, maintaining that the association wasn't addressing its concerns, refused to pay $73,648 in annual membership dues.
 
"We no longer have to pay them for beating us up," Dave Newell, chairman of Metro's board, said after the meeting. "I see this as a clean break that's needed..."

I guess there aren't too many Huskers on the fora.

I would also welcome wild speculation and reading between the lines from any non-Nebraskans who care to comment :)
