I've posted another topic (here:
http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,57618.0.html) about the issue my spouse and I have. For brevity, my husband has a science TT position (his first, started last fall) that he likes, I have a federal position that I like, but the two places are separated by a long commute (2.5 hours one way). We are looking for ways to make it work in the short term, but in the long term my spouse has proposed looking for a new TT job in a new place where both of us could live and work in the same city. How likely is this? Are there statistics for it? We know of several who have tried and been successful, but know others who have tried and failed. My husband really likes his school, but would be willing to move somewhere else. I should say that this probably would not happen for at least 2 more years (his third year).
Is there a better time to move (before tenure, before 3rd year review)? When schools look at applications are there any pluses or minuses to nontenured faculty? Let's pretend his three years was productive (solid publications, grants, good teaching reviews, and productive students).
