"We still see the viscous cycles of poor uneducated neighborhoods in modern day society."

Indeed--those who grow up in such neighborhoods often find themselves stuck there.

I asked a question about why one should frame one's argument in relation to other work that has previously been done on the same topic.  My student's answer:

Quote
The reason why you should lay out what you are responding to as if you're making your own argument is because it takes the reader into a world of persuasion in which they will be convinced of whatever the writer is trying to explain.

I like the idea of the mesmeric power of the framing device.  I bet the Republicans would love to get their hands on this knowledge!

Did you guys know that Citizen Kane is a documentary?

We can tell because it's in black and white.

Unfortunately, I think conjugate gives good advice.

Don't forget the first years of "Bewitched"!  And of course "I Love Lucy".  Clearly a documentary on the Latino experience in America.

The Wizard of Oz before they get to Oz is in black and white.  But once they are in Oz the whole
movie is in color -  I guess it ceases to be a documentary and starts to be fiction.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain....

What about silent movies, then?  Are they a special class of documentary?

Just imagine how common it must have been once for walls to fall while someone is standing where the window is.

From a paper on gender:

...If a man wears dress pants, leather shoes, a button down shirt, and styled hair one may assume that he is a more feminine male...

Apart from the hair thing (which I lack), this is pretty much a description of my teaching attire.  I had to laugh.  Thank goodness I'm secure enough in my masculinity to wear leather shoes.

That student will get EATEN ALIVE if he or she persists in that assumption and gets a job in my law firm.

What sort of shoes does she think the more masculine male wears? What are those shoes made of?  Is she thinking Crocs? Or something canvas? I can't even come up with a decent conjecture.

I think that those tan suede-like construction worker lace-up boots are de rigeur for the less feminine male.

So feminine males look like the dudes on Mad Men minus the ties? Nice business clothes don't scream "GENDER DEVIANT!" to me...
