I've just discovered what this spew shield thing is for.  Although, I know people who've spent time working in Port Au Prince who might argue that there's not so much of a distinction between the two.

Were they reading Carpentier's Kingdom of this World?

I didn't think so, but it was worth a try.

[This novel] doesn't give a lot of themes on which to write thousands of essays.

That's OK, hon, you only have to write one.

Did they at least get the location right?

Re-enactment buffs could use these less important wars for downtime: "Let's all meet at Tracy's Tavern to re-enact the war that didn't take place between the United States and Canada."

For real re-enactment buffs there is no downtime....

From a paper fuzzy_spouse & I have dubbed the "fundamental misunderstandings about U.S. History" paper (not written for a history class):

"The Americans had just broken free from the rule of King George III because of the unfair conditions they no longer wanted to endure in Great Britain.  Americans did not want the same thing to occur in their country.  They did not want to give all of the power to one individual knowing that it could result in tyranny."

And later on gender sensitivity kicks historical accuracy while it's down:

"Jackson thought that the president, by him/herself, should represent the people through his/her power and control."

"In the, play, Antigone there is many people who go through a lot of things."

I cannot tell you how pleased I am that a student can write such a thesis after only two semesters of college English.

Well, I could tell you. But the moderators might delete the post and then banish me forever.

Actually I've been watching a lot of CNN lately and I believe this to be totally accurate. Literally.

Dr. Anakin sits high and mightily in her office while she condemns students to lives of misery and drudgery, washing out their husbands' underwear in filthy water. In addition, she is a horrible teacher. She welcomes you to Introduction to Biology!

"I am just a southern girl and the play was in ancient Elizabethean so I couldn't understand what they were saying."

SIGH

I am not even sure what "ancient Elizabethean" is and the play she was referencing was written in th e1970's - in modern English.  It was simply about Henry the 8th.  Maybe that's it - since Henry was pre-Elizabeth (what with being her dad and all) that made it "ancient Elizabethean"!
