I, Oseph, need to lose ten pounds of lingering dissertation weight.

I have lost all of the baby weight and some, and I am now one size smaller than I was pre-pregnancy.  I still, however, am two sizes larger than I was before starting graduate school.  I got down to pre-grad school weight for my wedding, but it was done through a strict low-carb diet and was not something I could maintain.  Ten pounds, however, will put me just one size larger than when I started grad school, and it is a healthy weight that I can maintain long-term, I think.

My limitations are that right now I do not have time for the gym, between work and Baby Oseph.  I do, however, burn many calories with errands and cleaning, and I can start going for long walks with Baby Oseph.  I hate running, and we can't afford a treadmill or stairmaster just yet.  So for right now, in addition to trying to take Baby Oseph on some brisk walks until I have gym time, it's really the food holding me back - I like good food a little too much, particularly buttery food and starchy food.  Sugar isn't such a big deal for me, although I love fruit.

I've talked with my doctor, and she suggests going back to the gestational diabetes diet I was on during the pregnancy, because of my family history of glucose intolerance.  The GD diet isn't so much low-carb as good carbs at the right time of day with the right combination of fats and proteins to slow down absorption.  She says I can cheat a little - things like eating steel-cut oats in the morning instead of the endless eggs of the GD diet.  In general, however, I need to cut out refined sugar, except for maybe one treat a week, and eat more lean protein and fibrous plant matter to fill me up.  I need to cut out the nightly cocktail also (boo), and have maybe two drinks a week instead.  I've been good about eating mostly good fats, but I still eat too many of them.  I don't need to make my diet especially low fat (cholesterol and triglycerides are fine), just less fat (and good fat).

So what I'm asking for here is a little encouragement and whip-cracking - maybe check up on me once in awhile to ask about my progress and make sure I'm eating well?  I would very much appreciate if people could post some easy to make, delicious, whole-grainy, high fiber, good fats and proteins recipes (or post links).  And a little shame will go a long way in making me stick to my diet.

I would love to be able to report a lost pound every ten days or so - either that, or announce the happy day where I drop down a size.

Oh yes, and please feel free to join in if you want to lose ten pounds of [insert moniker here]!  The more the merrier!

Thanks in advance to all who participate in bidding farewell to ten pounds of Oseph!

It's been two minutes since your last post.  Have you lost any weight yet?

Greetings Oseph of the ten pounds:

You might wander over to the Fluffy Faculty Forum http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,40931.0.html to see other tricks and tangents.

And good luck! Lots of people on are this path with you.

Good one.  I haven't been typing furiously enough, but I am drinking water.  I'm also going to bed soon - stress and fatigue tend to make my cortisol levels rise, and that makes me gain weight.

The first time I read the title of that thread, I thought it was about stepping outside your stern, professorial demeanor to act, well, fluffy for a moment.

There are a lot of good tips and tricks written there.  I do know exactly what I need to do to lose weight - I just need people nagging me about my progress - worked wonders when my mother kept reminding me that I would have my wedding photos for the rest of my life, and I really didn't want to cringe every time I look at them.

If people don't respond here, then maybe I'll go barge on in over there at the Fluffy Faculty Forum and ask for help.

I would like to lose more than 10 pounds of GeorgiaProf.  But, I will happily join you in your efforts.  I was doing okay until the Superbowl - darn those nachos!  I have managed tonight to resist the temptation to grab them and finish the bag!

Good luck to you Oseph and anyone else who wants to join in!

Welcome to the journey, Georgiaprof!

The gods gave me a nice little jumpstart - Mr. Oseph closed the refrigerator door tonight, and the domed cake plate on top fell off with all of the leftover (from Baby Oseph's party) pet*** fours inside.  The pet*** fours were covered in shattered glass, so we threw them all away.  It was great.

Fabulous!  Unfortunately, the siren call of the nachos had the usual effect over here.  Sigh.  I did stop before I had eaten the whole bag.  I really should throw the darn things away, but I can't bring myself to do that yet.

The scale will not be my friend in the morning.

I too could lose a little excess.  By the way, did I ever show you my trick for foiling the robo-censor, so you can type "petits fours" with impunity rather than asterisks?

Order Nutrisystem for two weeks. I've been on it for 1 1/2 weeks, and I've already lost 7-8 pounds. It's easy, and the food is good, and you won't go crazy. If only I just had 10 pounds to lost...

I just noticed that.  That is totally absurd.  I can see your trick now that I am in Post Reply mode - the bracketing.

The Robo-Censor is tyrannical.

The scale was not grumpy this morning!  I am officially moving in the right direction.

Mr. GP's doctor at one time said that he was going to write a weight loss book.  It would have two chapters.  Chapter One:  Eat less.  Chapter Two:  Move more.

I am working on the eating less portion of this miraculous plan!  Once I succeed there and level out on the weight loss, I will toss in the move more part of this plan - unless I am happy with where I am at that point.

I have a fabulous recommendation. Norwalk virus. Ugh.

(Sorry. Seriously, good luck with this. Try to find a diet that you like well enough that it can become a way of life rather than a "diet." The good food/bad food thing is hard to maintain in the long run.)

Yes, I know.  I think the GD diet, with perhaps a once-a-week splurge, is how I should be eating long-term, since both sides of my family is prone to type II diabetes.  It isn't such a bad diet either - it just involves being careful with portions, combinations, and timing, but it did become second nature to me after about a week.

Re: the Norwalk virus - perhaps I should go on a cruise, eat an awful lot at the buffet the first night, and then spend the next four or five days ill in my cabin - it seems like every cruise ship is just crawling with the virus.  MIL keeps trying to get us to go on a cruise, and I just refuse, unless it is a cruise that has a perfect track record with regard to those nasty illnesses.  Cruises just seem like floating petri dishes of disease.
