Does anyone else have experience with prednisone messing up your sleep? I've got a rotator cuff injury and was given darvocet and prednisone, but now I can't sleep more than a few minutes at a time.

I took several five-day courses of prednisone plus one injection, all in one year, a few years back for a back problem. It can make you feel really wired like you've had too much caffeine, so I imagine it might affect sleep patterns. I think it can increase adrenaline or something like that.
It does weird things to the body. That's for sure. It seemed to make me gain weight in the middle where I never had before. Normally I gain weight like a "pear" rather than an "apple".

Yes, sleep disturbance is one of the well-known side effects of steroids--along with headaches :(.

I was advised to take the steroids early in the morning. Of course, if I had had darvocet with it I am not so sure I would have had to worry about sleep.

The prednisone is one of those deals where I take 6 the first day at specified times, then five the next and so on. A pharmacist will tell you that you can go ahead and take them all the first evening, but don't believe them. I did that once and took all six for the first day at once. I'm not a violent person, but I did get a touch cranky. Darvocet has no effect on the insomnia.

I've been taking prednisone for years. Most doctors will tell you that the best thing to do is to take it as a morning dose-- but of course, you should heed your doctor's instructions regarding dosage. If it is giving you that much sleep interruption, however, I'd call your doc and ask if you can switch to taking it in the morning. That won't, of course, do anything about the hair growth, weight gain, or hot flashes that come with steroids, but it will help with sleeping.

Let the doc know about the sleep disruption - the dose might need to be adjusted. Last time I was on steroids, I couldn't sleep for more than 2-3 hours, I had a wicked headache, the irritability was such that I really thought I might punch someone, and I was so amazingly productive that I didn't care about the side-effects.

Fortunately, my sleep has returned as I tapered of the prednisone. It did what it was supposed to, it healed my shoulder pretty well. I saw an orthopedist and he said whatever was going on was muscular, not skeletal. I went home and took a muscle relaxer and got my sleep back on track.

I agree the 'roids are sometimes a necessary evil. The side-effects are not trivial, but sometimes it's worth it to try to ride them out in the short term. (I cannot even imagine having to take steroids long-term!)
