This thread is for discussion of dysthymia or SAD.

I'm eating cheez-its and in bed before 8pm on a Friday night. I just got this electric blanket and it beckons to me all day: come back to beeeeddd...it's cold out there....forget about work and curl up with some salty carbs and a netflix movie under a nice electric blankie....

Seriously - I have a touch of dysthymia or winter melancholy lately. Dark thoughts, pessimism, low energy, bad carb cravings. I have one of those lightboxes but the special bulb broke and I never seem to remember to order a new bulb (and they're expensive). Blah.

I have SAD.  It was worse when I lived in Chicago, since it's often so grey there during the winter.  Now it's manageable, but I have to keep on top of it with regular walks outside and vitamins.  I don't have a lightbox.  It's really an annoying condition - just amorphous enough for it to not be taken seriously by others and for me to forget about until I am whacked upside the head with total apathy.

Yes! I'm having the midwinter blahs this week; I feel sort of draggy and uninterested in everything.

We must have the same electric blanket. From about noon onwards, mine is whispering stuff about pasta with lots of melted cheese on it, suggesting naps, pooh-poohing the need to work. The sense of everything being bleak is terrible.

Oh, lordie, I never knew anyone who loved salty carbs as much as I do. It's good to find friends! And I've been diagnosed with dysthmic disorder, so there you go...

Had to delurk.  I understand.  Never knew what SAD was growing up in a mildew-ridden area-- didn't bother me at all.  Then I moved away from the greyness to the snowbelt and discovered the concept of sun in winter.  When I went home to visit during the winter-- "oh.  that's what everyone was talking about."

Seems the sun has worn off though.  Or maybe it's just weeks of damp and stupid people parading into my office.

I did the course in "When Your Body Gets the Blues" a couple years back, and may have to do it again.  They have their own vitamins they've put together, but iirc, they also tell you what and how much to take so you can buy your own.

Lost in the woods, is it vitamins only, or are there other recommendations as well?

I had three consecutive very long work days this week. Today started at 9am and went straight through until 5. Very intensive classes all day long. I've been home for a couple of hours resting (under the electric blanket and with the dog, of course) but now I've got to go back and move a bunch of equipment with a cargo van. The electric blanket is a dog magnet. Turn it on and he gloms right onto it.

Blech. It's so hard to get out of bed and go do another round of work tonight. Grumble. I'm going to miss 30 Rock. Tomorrow will be a less hectic day, and the weekend will be relatively calm. I work every day - but at least this weekend I'll have time to relax some, catch up on household chores and do a bit of reading for pleasure.

Howdie, friend! Care to share some of the pizza I'm munching on for breakfast?

My absolute favorite breakfast is cold leftover pizza, ideally with black olives and fresh tomatoes--yum! Unfortunately, I just can't tolerate the carbs any more and so it's strictly off-limits. Eat another piece for me, Psychdiva?

The other type of cold pizza that is fantastic for breakfast is Pierogie Pizza. This may be a regional specialty, but if you're lucky enough to find pizza dough slathered with mashed potatoes, butter, onions, and cheddar cheese, a lucky person you are indeed. Mmm, I can't believe I do this to myself.
