<cue the intro music for NPR's All Things Considered>
Here, a place for All Things Uterine: bleeding, cramps, perimenopause, menopause, post-menopause, fibroids, hormones, etc, etc. Advil, ice cubes, tampons and gin in ample supply. Females of any age are cordially invited. Sympathetic men may lurk but are forewarned that this thread is rated 'R' for red.
A listener asks via email, Does anyone have an easy or unremarkable time with menopause?

Oh, don't I hope! If night sweats come, can hot flashes be far behind? ( ice cubes?)

I thought I was having night sweats a few evenings ago. Turned out to be the result of all of the blankets thrown onto me in a double layer by a sleeping Mr. P, plus the dog deciding that he wanted to lie on top of the heap. (ice cubes?)
A friend swears by a bag of ice for cooling down when she's having hot flashes. She puts it on the back of her neck.

When a female dog or cat is spayed, do they go through surgical menopause?

Night sweats and hot flashes generally have been the most notable part of the process for me lately. My peri-menopause (a decade-long process, I'm sorry to say), was characterized by incredibly heavy bleeding, although that improved considerably when I went on high doses of fish oil for the RA. But now...have I mentioned the hot flashes?

How high a dose and what brand? I take 6g total daily, for 3 g combined EPA/DHA. When I can afford it I got "the good stuff" from either Sears or Greens Plus (Canadian brand). When I'm poor--like now--I take Trader Joe's. All are molecularly distilled, which is the most important thing with high-dosage fish oil, so you avoid the heavy metals. The clinical studies that have been done on RA show a need for a minimum dose of 3g EPA/DHA per day. Up to 10g has been studied, but the increased efficacy with increased dose stopped above 6g.

Thanks for the suggestion about the ice cubes on the back of the neck. Maybe I can borrow the SO's battered bag of frozen french fries - he's been using it for over a month on his "new" knee.

Are we going to visit some small town where a folk poet has been writing about the endometrium as performance art?

I want to speak out against hysterectomies for non-malignant ailments. Fibroids and other uterine problems can be corrected using interventional radiology. Don't fall for it from your OB/GYN (mine told me that her medical malpractice insurance didn't cover fibroid removal, only hysterectomies). A bit of research, a bit of drive out of state, and I had intrauterine embolism (5 day recovery) in place of a total hysterectomy for bleeding fibroids (9 week recovery, and you are free to imagine the cost and other differences).
Feel free to PM me for more info.

Does that mold better than the high-tech gel the hospital gave us for my bionic ankle? Think I'll ask Labspouse to pick up some; maybe some frozen peas too.

If you look in the Store at www.hystersisters.com, they have gel packs specifically for this purpose. The flashes, not the whiskey.

Are we going to visit some small town where a folk poet has been writing about the endometrium as performance art? Yes, and there will be a choreographer to show us her interpretive dance based on the poetry, entitled EndoMeTrium.
