Do NOT include a photo. I see this from time to time, and it just makes the candidate look like they don't understand the process.

But do put your photo on your web site, alongside your CV. People do this all the time. It helped me, I feel certain.

In all the hundreds of applicants that I have vetted, I have never checked out someone's on-line cv. I have a hard copy in front of me -- that is usually all that I need.

From time to time I will go read an article that is listed on the cv, or I will check to see how frequently its been cited, but that's it.

A comment on letters of references: some schools won't allow letter-writers to refer to an applicant's race, sex, age, etc.

Back in the day, when a grad school friend was on the job market but out of the country, I was arranging for her reference letters to be submitted to her campus credentials file. The credentials office actually returned a letter to one of the letter-writer because he had referred to my friend's (minority) racial identity. He had to remove the "offending" language. It was ridiculous. This was probably the only time in her life when it would have been to her advantage for potential employers to know her racial identity (mainly because of her field), and here people were being told they couldn't reveal it! We joked halfheartedly about how fast she could change her name to something like Tameka Washington. It really sucked. Fortunately she has ended up in an excellent job.
