Tuesday I'm reading the local paper and I see (another) story about a 24-year old drunken punk speeding down our local restaurant row last Saturday. He crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a car head-on. As these stories usually go, the drunken fool has minor injuries. The innocent guy in the wrong place at the wrong time is in critical but stable condition in the hospital. As I usually do, I silently wish every form of harm to the drunken fool. Guess who limped into my class yesterday?

Driving under the influence is bad. I am sorry it happened.

I'll bet $5 of my own money he'll ask for an extension on an assignment because of a court date.

Sorry. I'm not helping here.

Prytania will likely disagree with me here (sorry, Pry! I like you, I really do), but I favor harsher driving-while-intoxicated penalties than what we have on the books now. The fact that someone could almost kill another human being on Saturday and return to their normal life less than half-a-week later is just plain wrong.

That's not to say that I think we should be pulling over drivers left and right for suspected DWI. To the contrary, that seems counterproductive. But for people who commit stupid acts, the penalties should be far more severe, IMHO.

You're very perceptive. He's already asked me to reopen an introductory online pre-test that I give at the beginning of the semester.

Should I give him an Incomplete if he ends up in prison before the semester ends?

Apropos to nothing, the valedictorian of my undergraduate class was in prison, who completed his degree behind bars. Who says incarceration can't lead to productivity in society (of a sort)?

alshealy:

I am sorry this happened; I don't think it was deliberate on his part.
He faces all consequences: with law, with your class and the rest.
Rather than reacting (which is normal), maintain your academic standards. I am sure he is taking classes with other professors too and they also feel bad, but will enforce their syllabii rules.

Incomplete is given within the prevailing university policies for such cases; student affairs dean  would help.

Teach_assist, are you Concerned Parent by any chance?

If not, then many apologies.  I'm just always on the lookout for CP's re-emergence on the fora.

It's so uncalled for when people take DUI seriously, isn't it? I mean, aren't there BIGGER things to worry about than someone who just had a few beers and accidentally nearly killed someone?

Oseph:

I am sorry you dont like my comments. What is wrong with my comments?

How about sticking to OP rather than trying to befriend me or trying to pick on me or trying to kill me;;;;;;whatever is the case with you. I dont appreciate it anymore as it has gone beyond the norms of decency. I am not certainly not looking to befriend you. In other words, mind your own business....you are not appreciated.
