i have my personal reason not to capitalize the first letter of any words. a few literary figures did so. and i can't see why this is related to academic excellency (it's pretty obvious i did it on purpose, and no i don't do that in application letters).
Okay, BBGee, let's see if this will make the point: Yo Posts Are Whack. Replace "YouTube Comment" with "CHE Fora post" to get the full effect. That's my favorite video. Watch and learn. Oh, that was good. I love it. It's got three quarters of a million views or so, and I'm doing my part to make them get to a million. I have subscribed to their channel, which is fairly impressive; it's only the second channel I've subscribed to. Lots of people need to see that video. It will help if they also know Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back, but that's not really necessary.

So, if I am following y'all, you think that this whole academy thing should have these "rules" imposed by hierarchical professors, even if they stifle my creativity and force me to function within such strict parameters that I would be better of wearing a corset?
Let me see. Maybe the math is off. Me: Degree? Check. Job? Check. Publications? Check. Status in field? Check. Status on Search Committees? Check. Status for admissions' choices? Check. Final arbiter of all classroom policy? Check. Tenure? Check. OP: Degree? Doubtful. Job? Ummm. No. Publications? Need I go on? Yup. You got it in one. Power differential oppressive system corsets blahblahblah. No one is really pissed by the system; just that they're not the ones invested in it.

"Happy alternative times" may well be my new favorite phrase. Were it the early '90s, I'd call MTV up right now and suggest it as a show title or VJ tagline. The rest of the post was well said, too, J_P. Ah, yes. We would have happy alternative times.

i don't see why some of you are judging me without knowing me. i'm not asking for criticism here (thanks anyway though), and i'm not excusing myself. i'm asking questions! i have my personal reason not to capitalize the first letter of any words. a few literary figures did so. and i can't see why this is related to academic excellency (it's pretty obvious i did it on purpose, and no i don't do that in application letters). i said i'm not a straight A student TYPE. I didn't say I'm not straight A, or almost straight A at grad school. and all these are related to my questions of "alternative type" (not limited to myself).
i'm not going to specify what experiences i do have here (to assume that one can't have good outside experience at 22 is kind of naive for this century isn't it). what i meant by "improve if i'm able to" was that i'm not able to improve my undergrad gpa anymore as much as i would like to, and no time for gre at this point either. i would rather working on things that go beyond the point of showing I'm capable from a piece of paper. we all know too many people who can write well with perfect grammar and no flair.
(oops i'm excusing myself again!)
I had a lousy undergrad GPA, under 3.0, and am presently in an excellent research PhD program. I also had very high GRE scores and MA grades when I applied. I'd suggest you talk to advisers in your MFA program about the kind of opportunities that will work for you. An MFA is a terminal degree and you can teach at a university with one. Your adviser can help you judge whether your portfolio or repertoire (if in a studio/performance field) is high-level enough for you to have a chance. Remember that with the economy here doing poorly you may face more competition from fellow applicants than in a boom year. Good luck.

I read the first few sentences of this thread when it first started, and then got bored. But I came across JP's post in the HoF. You could fill out the ILL paperwork for me in your devil-may-care-about-caps way;
Hee hee. Bravo! Really.

I had a discussion about online communication with my graduate students last night, and they are so angry with their contemporaries who use text speak and the like. "Don't they know how stupid they are making all of us look?" one said.
I love my students.

I'm not disagreeing with above posts. But the GRE is pretty sillly, isn't it? If it was sprung on unsuspecting students (I can't think how) it might mean something. But 'studying for the GRE' is conceptually bizarre. Plus, my current university required that I take the GRE, but did not care what my result was. Struck me as implying that admissions and the GRE people are in cahoots.

I actually agree. Its mother the SAT was actually put into place to ferret out diamonds in the rough. It was meant to give equal access to students from an array of backgrounds. Now it is just a test you can study for, and if you have the time and the money, you'll do better than your peers who have less of both. Ditto for the GRE and other similar crap coming out of Princeton.
