Anthroid, what's wrong with pulling Big Orange Tabby's tooth? Isn't that an option?

It is, and it's a cheaper one, but the vet was muttering something about abcesses and something else....I really like her otherwise.

Perhaps I should get a second opinion.

I think I would.  One of my own teeth had a problem a while back; endodontist wanted to charge $200 just to find out whether it could be saved, ie that wouldn't begin to cover the root canal/crown he'd proceed to do if it was salvageable.

My regular dentist pulled it for $45.  End of story.

I have a call in to the other large vet outfit in town (and they also have primo boarding facilities, including a doggie pool).  For a town this size there are actually a fair number of vets.  I really do like my vet otherwise.  But a root canal for a cat seems a bit over the top.

I mean, I've never had a root canal.  Why would my ten year old cat need one?

Anthroid, chime on getting a second opinion. Charlotte, the cat whom I frequently watch, is missing most of her teeth and seems no worse for the wear (she was neglected by her previous owner). The vet recommended a minor procedure to clear an infection in her gums, but otherwise said not to worry too much about her remaining teeth.

Sorry for the O(current)T post, but I wanted to share something I thought you would appreciate:

I can pill a cat!

By myself!

Mr. P said he thought pilling a cat was a semester-long class in vet school. But I can now do it on the 2nd or 3rd time! So maybe I shouldn't crow about it, but I am pleased. This was a long time in the making.

Best wishes for your cat's teeth, as well.

Congratulations, phlegmatic!  Now that you've got the hang of it, it will get even easier!

(Anthroid, where'd you get those cute musical notes?)

Thank you, thank you.

[bows]

We always took the easy way out--grinding up pills and putting them in food. But PhlegCat has to take a special pill that can't be ground. We were making homemade "pill pockets" with her special food, but after about a week she figured out the trick and stopped taking the pill that way.

I feel like I just learned how to drive a stick shift or something!

Anyway, I hope everyone's cats are enjoying the snow! PhlegCat is indoors now but I think she would not enjoy playing in snow that is twice as tall as her.

(The symbol function in Word.  I drafted the post in Word with the music symbols and just pasted the whole thing in here!  I think it was Conjugate who taught me that--and of course he is another great cat person!)

Hooray, Phlegmatic!!! Best wishes for PhlegCat's good health.

I've been really fortunate that Charlotte--the only cat I've ever had to pill--has been fairly cooperative as far as the process goes. She doesn't "like" it per se, but she doesn't hide when the pills come out or try to bite/scratch when it happens. There have been a few "projectile pill missile" incidents over the past year, but I'll take that over some of the stories I've heard about other people's cats.

That's Stanzi as well.  She doesn't like it, and she'll spit it out if she gets a chance, but there's no real nastiness.

And when we're done, she curls up on my footstool and purrs.  A very forgiving puss.

I tried to show off my new cat-pilling skills to Mr. P today and it took four tries. That's what bragging gets me. ;)
