Have you done one--not a research project, but a lecture exchange? Did you bring any family members (kids)?  What country?  Was it worth it?

I posted a somewhat similar Q on Working Abroad with few bites, then realized the Q is more "travel" than "working abroad" per se.  So am trying again.  I'd really appreciate feedback, esp. from anyone who took kids to a developing country.

I have done two lecture exchanges although Oslo (six month) and Sheffield (one year) are definitely no places in developing countries.

However, both times I took my wife and my son who was back then three and seven years old. Of course, he didn't realize much of his first visit to another country but he really enjoyed the second. As long as you find a good international school or kindergarten and your wife has the possibility to arrange something to do that she cares for, your trip will be just fine.

What country or region are you planning to visit? I am sure it all depends on the conditions at this place. How safe and clean is you housing? Is there any transportation you can use? Do you have access to a local representative of your country? Do credit cards work there? Does your insurance cover long term stays in developing countries?
