Hi

I am considering to apply to Kaust. I am currently (tenured) academic staff in a prestigeous British university. As it has been mentioned I am fed up of begging for funding which leaves little time to do exciting research.

I would like to know about the tenure system at Kaust and the time they take to consider application, arrange interviews if shortlisted etc.

Cheers

How much funding per year do they provide, and for how long ?

I have been offered a faculty position at KAUST and have recently visited the KAUST site.  The offer is very generous and the campus is very impressive.  It is still under construction, but set to be done in July of this year.  To answer questions:

vpsureshkumar:  Most faculty will be moving to KAUST in July 2009.  They are seeking faculty from all over the world.  You can look at the list on their webpage to see who they have hired so far.

melanez: The hiring is currently being done by their academic alliance partners.  For instance, I interviewed at Stanford.  It was about 2 months from when I applied to when I interviewed, and they told me it would be 4-6 weeks after that before I heard back, but in my case I heard back much sooner (in a few days).  There is no tenure at KAUST; all faculty are on 5-year rolling contracts.  The contract is renewed (or not) based on a performance review after 3-4 years.

sciencephd: The funding depends on the position (assistant, associate, or full professor) and probably on other things.  In my case, it is FAR more funding than I could conceive of having anywhere else.  The funding is also for 5 years initially.

So are we talking about $200,000 / year or more in research funding for laboratory sciences ?

Mathdoc

Thanks for your answer. I will be applying through Stanford as well. Two more questions, (1) at which level have you been hired? I am not sure if I should go for associate or assistant. (2) Have you been given some details about the teaching load?

many thanks

sciencephd: Yes, significantly more.  I probably shouldn't say more than that, but you get the idea.

melanez: I have been offered an assistant prof. job.  I'm not sure what the criteria are, but you could browse the CVs of the people hired (go to the KAUST site, click on faculty and then 'faculty directory' to get a general idea.  The teaching load for all faculty will be 1/1.

Are KAUST still recruiting faculty? I couldn't find any adverstised position through their website. Or is there another way of finding about these positions?

Thanks in advance for any information.
