Is anybody applying to KAUST. Any idea about how much salary one can expect as an entry level professor? Right now they are promising the moon with a seven star campus, no funding/cultural restrictions. I wonder if that will turn out to be a bait and switch tactic.

Hi there,
I just accepted an assistant professor position with them. The overall take home pay is around 9k per month, while they will give a Fully furnished 3 bedroom housing plus lots of benefits. The main attraction for me was the freedom to do research without begging for grants. Let us hope everything works out well.

Do the salaries vary by department? 100k does not seem that high, for engineering departments.

I had 1 year of postdoc experience, and was appointed in to electrical engineering as an assistant prof. |

They seem to emphasize selected areas in the sciences and engineering. But not engineering exclusively.

Would you provide a little information? I recently had a prelim interview with KAUST and would like to know more about their interviewing process. How long they take, etc.
I am in a very different field than engineering. Is it normal in your field to only do a one year postdoc before you get an Assist Prof position? I ask because one year in my field wouldn't get one a nice AP position.
Have you been there yet or are you going to visit before you move?
Any other information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Saith the king: "The University shall have all the resources that it needs to pursue these goals. A perpetual waqf (endowment) is being established and shall be managed for its benefit by an independent Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees shall embody wise and responsible governance in support of the spirit of creativity that the University represents." The website lists the current Trustees, including (among the Americans) the president of Princeton. I'm not clear, though, on whether this governing board is the same board that will be in charge of the finances. They don't seem to be hiring semiotically aware farm machinery, so it's a moot point to me. Intriguing website, though. |

I did not have any prelim interview, they flew me to their Academic alliance partners. Where I had a day of interviews and an hour presentation on my research. Yes it is quite common to get a faculty position straight out of PhD. |

That was a rather straight forward recruitment process. Anyway congratulations on your appointment. When are you suppose to report for work. What is the area of your specialization? Who actually interview you and are they particularly looking for candidates from the US or with US experience? What about from the Asian countries. Please advise.
